Olexandr Murashko (07.09.1875 – 14.06.1919) is a famous Ukrainian artist, a representative of modernism and impressionism, co-founder of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. He was born in Kyiv, studied at the Kyiv Drawing School of Mykola Murashko, at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the studio of Ilya Ripyn, and later studied and created in Munich and Paris. At the Munich International Exhibition in 1909, Oleksandr Murashko's painting "Carousel" received a gold medal and brought him world recognition. Since then, the artist's paintings have been exhibited at leading European exhibitions, were published in many magazines. In 1909–1910, personal exhibitions of Oleksandr Murashko were held in Düsseldorf, Cologne and Berlin.
Murashko returned to Kyiv with the desire to integrate Ukrainian art into a pan-European context. He taught at the Kyiv Art School, and in 1917 became one of the most active founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. Murashko was killed in the prime of his life in 1919 on a Kyiv street by a shot to the back of the head, most likely by the Chekists. The version spread in the Soviet press that he was killed for the purpose of robbery did not inspire confidence, since the artist left valuables.
The painting “Annunciation” (1909) is kept in the National Art Museum of Ukraine and is one of Oleksandr Murashko’s most famous works
