Georgy Narbut (09.03.1886 - 23.05.1920) - Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and its first rector. Narbut is called the "designer of the Ukrainian state", since he is the author of the design of the first Ukrainian banknotes, postage stamps, the design of the coat of arms and seal of the UNR, as well as the alphabet and a unique font, the real popularity of which in Ukraine has become possible only now, a hundred years after their creation. Narbut developed a national style in which he combined modernism with the decorativeness of the Cossack Baroque. For this, Georgy Narbut, himself a descendant of the ancient Cossack family of the Starshynskyi, carefully studied ancient Ukrainian painting, the heraldry of Ukrainian families, the graphics of Ukrainian manuscripts and old prints.
The work "Aeneas and His Army", presented in this puzzle, was created by Narbut in 1919 and, according to his plan, was to become one of a series of illustrations for Ivan Kotlyarevsky's poem "The Aeneid". Unfortunately, it became the only illustration that the author managed to create. Georgy Narbut died at the age of 34 from illness. Despite his short life, he left a powerful artistic legacy, the influence of which is only gaining momentum. The painting "Aeneas and His Army", like many other works by Georgy Narbut, is kept in the Kharkiv Art Museum.
