Mykhailo Boychuk (10/30/1882 - 07/13/1937) is a phenomenal Ukrainian artist, the founder of "Boychukism" - an art school and modernist movement that combined Byzantine traditions with modern European styles and Ukrainian folk art. He received his art education in Lviv, Vienna, Krakow, Munich and Paris. In 1909, Boychuk created the Renovation Byzantine group in Paris, which gained widespread recognition in art circles and became the beginning of his school. Soon, Mykhailo Boychuk, together with several students, returned to Ukraine to “work for the good of the Fatherland.”
In 1917, Mykhailo Boychuk became one of the founders and professors of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts in Kyiv, where he founded a school of monumental art. Boychuk sought to create a great national art that would be accessible to everyone and integrated into everyday life — from architecture to dishes. The Soviet authorities made every effort to destroy the Boychukists and ensure that no trace of their work remained. In 1937, Mykhailo Boychuk, his wife Sofia Nalepynska-Boychuk, and many students were shot. Numerous monumental frescoes, mosaics, paintings, and other works by the Boychukists were purposefully destroyed until 1952. Only a few works that managed to be hidden or black-and-white images of some works in magazines or books have survived to this day.
