Ilya Ripyn (August 5, 1844 – September 29, 1930) was a Ukrainian artist, a titan of realism of the late 19th century. He was born in the city of Chuguiv in the Kharkiv region, came from a Cossack family nicknamed Ripa. Already in adulthood, he went to study at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts - at that time the only higher art educational institution in the Russian Empire. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in Ukraine, Russia and Finland. For a long time, he was considered a Russian artist due to the dominance of the Russian/Soviet imperial discourse on Eastern Europe. Only now have some museums in the world, such as the New York Metropolitan Museum, begun to restore the historical truth and recognize Ilya Ripyn as a Ukrainian artist. The process of decolonizing Ripyn's legacy still has a long way to go.

Ripyn devoted many of his most insightful paintings to Ukrainian themes, the most famous example of which is the epic "Zaporozhets". The overarching motifs in his paintings dedicated to Ukraine are the thirst for freedom and the inner dignity of the characters. The painting "Ukrainian Woman by the Fence" (1876–1878) is a wonderful example of the artist's devotion to Ukrainian folk culture. The depicted woman in traditional dress carries not only beauty, but also inner dignity and strength. By assembling this canvas from puzzle pieces, you will receive aesthetic pleasure and a sense of peace, and you will also be able to examine in detail the elements of the Ukrainian folk costume of the late 19th century.
