Large Handmade Smotrych-Style Ceramic Bowl with 'Cuckoo on a Branch' Festive Motif – This piece is handcrafted by artisans from the 'Podillia Ceramics' collective in the Vinnytsia region. They are dedicated to reviving Ukraine's cultural heritage by creating tableware featuring the traditional painting styles of their region.
Smotrych ceramics represent a traditional form of artistic pottery originating from the town of Smotrych (Khmelnytskyi region, Podillia), dating back to the 18th century. Podillia artisans were renowned for their hand-painted, glazed plates, characterized by white or yellowish backgrounds and distinctive green and dark brown accents.
Historically, Smotrych was a major trading and pottery hub in the region. Today, modern artisans are reviving these craft traditions, while examples of antique pieces are preserved in museums and private collections.
Motif Symbolism:
- Cuckoo (bird) on a branch: A signature element of Smotrych-style painting. In the Podillia tradition, the bird embodies spring, good news, harmony, and family happiness.
- Leaves and berries: Symbols of fertility, abundance, and the continuity of life.
- Zigzags and wavy lines along the rim: Geometric protective patterns symbolizing water and a protective circle for the home.
Usage and Care:
- Microwave and oven: The tableware is suitable for heating and baking (it is recommended to place the dish in the oven before preheating).
- Not dishwasher safe! Please wash this item by hand using a soft sponge to preserve the integrity of the glaze.
This bowl combines practicality, beauty, and a rich Ukrainian heritage.
