"My name is Maria Kozakiewicz. I am from Ivano-Frankivsk. In 2016, I founded the public initiative to preserve the architectural heritage of the city "Frankivsk That Must Be Protected". I founded it because I love my city, and when you love, you protect it. You protect the people around you, the city space, houses, doors. You understand that these are your roots and your history, without which there may be no future. Now there is a war in our country, my husband Yuriy is defending Ukraine, and I work with my three children, volunteer for the Armed Forces, support IDPs, and engage in social activities. Before the war, I had many plans and dreams, and now, during the war, I want to realize them even more strongly. Because when there is a threat of losing something important, you start to value it even more, work even harder. And this work now morally saves and keeps.
The word "Home" has become special for Ukrainians. We naturally associate our home, our cities with some personal memories. Thanks to these memories, sentiments towards the streets and houses, we perceive the city as an integral part of our lives, a part of ourselves, and every corner, yard, little chapel is connected with a certain life event. And the war that came to our peaceful home showed how strongly we feel attached to our cities, how dear to us are the outlines of alleys and squares, the contours of roofs at sunrise or sunset, which we see every day from our windows, like clearly engraved maps of our cities on our hearts. Even after closing our eyes, their landscapes appear in front of our eyes... That's why we want to protect our land, our Home, most of all in the world right now. And win.
I dream of writing about us and the initiative in peacetime, after the Victory, when the war ends and everyone returns home. I realize that then, we will definitely have a more conscious attitude to heritage and restoration, and we will all have a lot of work to do to restore the country."
