The game - a walk in Uman is a game created by public activists and experts in historical heritage.
About the idea
An educational game about the symbolic space of the city - an invitation to look at familiar city routes from different perspectives. In the landscapes, squares, streets, buildings of the city we can see a multi-layered, interesting and complex past, where the Polish, Jewish, Ukrainian communities created the space of the city, designating it as a "town", "town" or "shtetl".
In optics - houses, memorials, commemorative spaces, stories of residents, selected plots from the city's past. Symbols that act as identifiers, a modern cut that shows our distance from the events of the past.
We can see all the wealth of traditions and culture by walking through the streets of the city, learning about the stories and fates of residents.
What is this game
- An opportunity through the game mechanics to problematize the theme of heritage in urban space.
- A selection of places and objects with descriptions that show a mosaic of the city's interesting and complex history.
- A mention of events and people that we can read from urban objects or spaces.
- A subjective selection of judgments and facts.
- An invitation to formulate questions and jointly seek answers.
What this game is not
- A guide that contains absolutely all the monuments that exist in Uman.
- An exhaustive list of facts about the city's past.
- An attempt to convince and give unambiguous answers to all questions.
Focuses and frames.
- The city's multicultural common heritage.
- Places of "non-memory" - not marked or labeled in any way, but which remind us of the events of the past.
- People who are remembered, who are seen and not seen, who create memory in the city.
- Heritage interpretation processes.
- Presence or absence of voices of women, children, ethnic and social communities in urban memory.
Methodology
The game format provides for different levels of inclusion or motivation:
- "Entertaining": getting to know new facts, training memory, motivation to win.
- "Open questions": invites to formulate broader questions and talk around them.
- "Implementation in the school curriculum": this development can be a useful addition to the school textbook, preparation for an educational hour, a walk around the city.
Elements:
- 24 cards
- Playing dice
- Hourglass
Rules of the game:
Take a card. Turn the hourglass over and carefully consider the image and text for 30 seconds (or 1 minute). When the time is up, pass the card to another player. Roll the dice and answer the question on the back of the card that corresponds to the number on the dice.
The other player must read the question and compare the answer with the picture on the card.
If the answer is correct, the card must remain with the player who answered. If incorrect, the card is returned to the deck.
The winner is the one who has the most cards at the end of the game.
(All answers to the questions are shown on the cards).
The game is recommended for children aged 10 and over and adults.
The game is designed for two or more players (can be played both independently and in teams).
The game is adaptable to use with other rules (you can increase the time, add your own questions, etc.).
The educational game is part of the practical program "Development and piloting of materials and methodological developments for teachers on complex topics of the common history of Lviv", developed within the framework of the project "ReHERIT: shared responsibility for a common heritage".
