Maria Prymachenko (12 January 1909 – 18 August 1997) was a Ukrainian painter, who worked in the naïve art style. She worked in painting, embroidery, and ceramics. In 1966, Maria Prymachenko received the Shevchenko Award. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared that 2009 was the year of Prymachenko. A street in Kyiv and an asteroid are named after her. Her works were exhibited in Paris, Warsaw, Sofia, Montreal, and Prague during her lifetime.
The puzzle "Beasts by Prymachenko" features a collage of nine paintings by the Maria Prymachenko. The names of the paintings are the following (from left to right, starting from the top row): Wild Sheep, 1989; Beaver, 1979; Ukrainian Bull, Three Years Old, Went Walking Through the Woods and Garners Strength, 1983; A Fish King Has Caught a Hoopoe and Is Full of Joy, 1983; The Beast Goes for a Walk, 1971; The Little Elephant Who Wanted to Be a Sailor, 1973; Tiger Laughs, 1982; This Beast is Making Magic, 1983; This Beast Has Come Running from the Hill, 1978.
The beasts series of paintings is a unique phenomenon in world art. Folk themes are traced in the artist's narrative paintings but the fantastic beasts are a pure creation of her brilliant imagination. Although implicitly she was painting people. Maria Prymachenko was an excellent observer and she read people like a book. Noticing certain human traits, she would embody them in her fantastic animals. The main theme of Prymachenko's work is the struggle between good and evil.
