A family business that gives children development

KolodaToys is a family workshop run by Maryna and Volodymyr Kodola that specializes in making wooden toys for the development of fine motor skills and coordination. In addition, they create wood and plywood decor, but the main focus remains on children's educational toys.

The idea to start their own business came about in 2016 when the couple moved from Kyiv to Cherkasy region. The initial investment was only $200-300 to buy tools. It all started with a garage and self-study of woodworking. The inspiration was a chance glance at a billboard in the post office, and Volodymyr decided to create a similar toy for his son. Later, he wanted to make quality toys for all children in Ukraine and around the world.

Support from the It`s Craft Revolver Fund

In 2024, KolodaToys took part in a competition from the ZeKraft Revolver Fund. The main goal was to raise funds for the production of a new batch of cubes, but they lacked the finances to purchase materials. When the couple learned about the opportunity to receive an interest-free grant, they decided to give it a try. The biggest challenge was filling out the financial calculation and business plan, but careful preparation paid off.

The funds received allowed us to purchase the necessary materials and blanks, which helped us to prepare effectively for the sales season. Thanks to this support, they were able to fulfill orders in a timely manner and increase production volumes. And after the successful sale of the products, the family returned the money to the fund, enabling other entrepreneurs to benefit from the same support.

Creativity and product quality

Volodymyr is the main author of ideas at KolodaToys. It is he who designs and draws the mazes for the bisicubes, which are the workshop's own models. The couple emphasizes the use of natural materials: wood and plywood, minimizing the amount of plastic. The main goal is to promote the development of motor skills, sensory and tactile sensations in children.

Most of all, Maryna and Volodymyr are inspired by customer feedback. The joy of children, their photos and videos with toys motivate them to move on. The Tosca deck receives 95% positive feedback, which confirms the high quality of their products.

Challenges of war and business recovery

The full-scale invasion had a serious impact on the business. In 2022, Maryna and her children moved abroad, and Volodymyr took up volunteer work. Later, they resumed production and began to expand sales again, although they faced new challenges: mobilizing part of the team and a lack of skilled workers in the region.

A family business has both advantages and challenges. Shared motivation helps to keep things moving forward, but separating work and personal life can sometimes be a challenge.

Future plans

Today it is difficult to make long-term plans due to the unstable situation in the country. Nevertheless, KolodaToys is committed to entering the retail market of children's stores in Ukraine and is working to improve its current sales channels. Participation in such competitions gives them the opportunity to keep going and develop even in difficult conditions.

Maryna advises entrepreneurs who are just starting their business not to give up, to have a clear goal, to develop and learn. The support from the It`s Craft  Revolving Fund was an important step for their workshop to further success and a confirmation that small businesses can get help even in difficult times.
