For many centuries, more than a millennium, the Chumaks, the proud sons of the Ukrainian people, have been paving new trade routes both in Ukraine and to other countries. The Chumaks were the first Ukrainian ambassadors, traders, diplomats, and, when necessary, victorious warriors who traveled along the Silk Road, to Tsarskii Hrad, to Moscow in the North, and to Paris and Vienna. And everywhere they carried our Ukrainian language, culture, and customs, as well as goods that those nations needed.
And they were carrying everything that Ukraine needed, especially salt. For Ukraine, salt has always had an almost sacred meaning - just listen to our folk proverbs: "They live well - they chew bread and salt" - said about a wealthy family, "There is no fate without salt" - salt was very much appreciated back then, "We ate a puddle of salt together" - about a good friend, a chumak.
The story is told by Pavlo Yarmii, co-founder of It`s Craft and author of Chumak Salt.
When the Chumaks set out in early spring, they always had their legendary "Chumak Salt" with them, a recipe that had been developed over centuries and kept secret, because on the road, the Chumak would face bad weather, illness, and lack of food suitable for consumption. And it was then that "Chumak Salt" came in handy as a seasoning for various dishes, as a medicine, and as a natural activator of vitality during travel and battles. The best authentic set of herbs and spices from all the territories where the Chumak had ever set foot was collected in Chumak Salt. However, most of them were from the native land of Ukraine: who else could preserve and protect the Chumaks on their long journeys if not their native land.
The village of Hlushkivtsi in Podillia, where I was born and raised, on the Chumak Kuchma route to Lviv, was founded by my Chumak ancestors back in the 14th century.
And when everyone needed to get together, they always gathered "around the cross," and for centuries, Chumaks have been going to the South in the spring. Our family, Yarmii, from the word yoke, was one of the largest not only in this village, but in the entire Yarmolynets district. The greatness of the village on the Milky Way is proved by the fact that in 1455 it received the Magdeburg Law, long before Kyiv received it. A yoke is a key detail for a Chumak mazha, because without a yoke, the oxen cannot pull the mazha. Perhaps that's why there were many carpenters in our family: my father, grandfather, great-grandfather... And it was there, in the village, when I was going through my father's library, that I found the handwritten recipe for Chumak Salt, or rather only part of it. And today, having lived in the South of Ukraine for more than 40 years and created the Salt Road project about the paths of my great-grandfathers, I added the last ingredients myself. In my opinion, without them, this salt would be less tasty and healing.
This is how Chumak Salt was born - a shared vision of the Ukrainian steppe by me and my ancestors. Enjoyment, health and a pleasant taste, because, as our ancestors used to say, the salt of the earth is in the sweat of the plowman, the blood of warriors and the tears of widows!
